Environmental Policy Statement

Objectives

Yester Farm Dairies Ltd is committed to minimising the impact of its activities on the environment. Our Environmental Policy aims to achieve:

  • Better environmental management which reduces waste and energy use

  • Improved efficiency to cut the cost of running our business

  • Ability to demonstrate compliance to expand our business opportunities

  • Meet legal obligations to win greater stakeholder and customer trust

  • Ability to prepare for a changing business landscape confidently

Strategy

The key points of our strategy to achieve this are:

  • Minimise waste by evaluating operations and ensuring they are as efficient as possible.

  • Actively promote recycling both internally and amongst its customers and suppliers.

  • Source and promote a product range to minimise the environmental impact of both production and distribution (“from field to fridge”).

  • Actively use electronic means to deliver paper products to reduce copying and mailing.

  • Meet or exceed all the environmental legislation that relates to the Company.

  • Work within the local community to promote local sourcing and related environmental activities.

Implementation

This policy is implemented through:-

  • Waste management contract with Hamilton Waste & Recycling for all plastic waste generated by processing plant;

  • All office waste segregated in bins (general, paper and metal/plastic) and recycled with East Lothian Council;

  • Waste water from processing plant is recycled with farm slurry and spread on farm land and does not enter any watercourses;

  • The company sources supplies of raw materials locally where possible. If this is not practical then sourcing is within Scotland and then UK. We do not import any raw materials.

  • Our major raw material is milk which is produced from our own farm thereby minimising distances travelled (nil) and avoiding need for transport or haulage;

  • The company embraces electronic communication. All customers are asked to accept invoices and statements by email and supplier invoices received by email where possible to reduce paper waste;

  • Annual notifications are received from plastic carton suppliers certifying polymer weights supplied to ensure compliance with Packaging Waste Directive;

  • Supplier Questionnaire includes section on Environmental Policy of suppliers.

  • All Staff provided with a copy of the Company’s Environmental Policy and made aware of personal environmental impact as well as the need to plan work (particularly journeys) to minimise environmental impact (emissions) where possible.

  • Copy of Environmental Policy displayed on Notice Board in main office.

Review

This policy is reviewed on at least an annual basis to take account of any changes in law or good practice or where a new environmental impact is identified. New workstreams are identified and progress on existing programme is updated.
